Career Coaching for Gay Men

CAREER COACHING FOR GAY MEN

Most gay men don’t need motivation about work.
They need clarity, leverage, and a place to think seriously about their professional lives.

Career coaching is for gay men who feel stalled, conflicted, underutilized, or uncertain about their next professional chapter — even when things look “fine” on paper. Some are early in their careers. Many are established professionals, leaders, creatives, or entrepreneurs reassessing direction, income, authority, sustainability, or long-term satisfaction.

I do a significant amount of this work.

Men come to me when career questions won’t resolve on their own — and when continuing to drift, tolerate dissatisfaction, or postpone decisions is no longer acceptable.

This is not therapy, and it is not motivational coaching.
It is focused, future-oriented work designed to support decision-making, strategy, and follow-through in your professional life.

WHAT CAREER COACHING FOCUSES ON

Career coaching is practical and goal-directed. Common areas of focus include:

– career direction and next-step decisions
– professional identity and authority
– income, role, and lifestyle tradeoffs
– leadership challenges and workplace dynamics
– entrepreneurship, private practice, or independent work
– navigating difficult bosses, colleagues, or organizational politics
– burnout, stagnation, and loss of momentum
– midlife and later-career reinvention
– planning for a meaningful and financially viable retirement

Many clients arrive knowing something isn’t working — but not yet knowing what should replace it.

A GAY-SPECIFIC LENS ON WORK AND AMBITION

Careers don’t develop in a vacuum.

For many gay men, work carries added psychological weight. Growing up with stigma, invisibility, or underestimated potential often shapes how ambition, self-worth, and validation show up in adult professional life. For men without children, work can take on outsized meaning — sometimes productively, sometimes at a cost.

Career coaching creates space to examine these dynamics without pathologizing them — and to make deliberate, self-directed choices rather than reactive ones.

HOW I WORK AS A CAREER COACH

I bring over three decades of experience working almost exclusively with gay men to this work. Over that time, I’ve worked with hundreds of men across the full arc of professional life — from early career exploration to senior leadership, entrepreneurship, career pivots, and retirement planning.

Career coaching helps you clarify:

– what you’re genuinely good at
– what you want to be doing versus what you’ve been doing by default
– where the market realistically supports your goals
– what changes are possible now versus later
– how to move forward with consistency rather than hesitation

My role is not to tell you what to do.
It is to help you think clearly, challenge avoidance or inertia, and support decisions you can stand behind.

COACHING STRUCTURE AND AVAILABILITY

Clients work with me in different ways depending on their goals and circumstances:

– weekly sessions during active transitions
– bi-weekly sessions for steady momentum
– monthly or periodic strategy sessions
– annual or seasonal consultations for planning and recalibration

Career coaching is collaborative, confidential, and tailored to your needs.

WHO THIS IS — AND IS NOT — A GOOD FIT FOR

Career coaching is a good fit if you:

– want thoughtful challenge rather than reassurance
– are ready to make decisions, not just discuss possibilities
– value experience, perspective, and directness over hype

Career coaching is not a fit if you are seeking psychotherapy, crisis care, diagnosis, or insurance-based services.

If you live in California and are looking for career-related support that involves psychotherapy or clinical treatment, licensed therapy services are available separately through my California practice:
